- When checking trail cameras always practice diligent scent elimination. Try not to check cameras more frequently then every two weeks during the summer and early fall before the season. Frequent visits to you hunting land can influence deer movement negatively before the season even starts. During the season check cameras on the way to and from stand locations as you hunt them. The intrusion has been made using scent free tactics for the hunt; checking cameras at the same time will optimize your hunting trips and time in the woods.

- Only use designated hunting clothes and especially boots for hunting or scouting. Having dual purpose clothing and equipment can be difficult to keep scent free and in certain circumstances become permanently contaminated with human or other odors.

- Utilize the scent free detergents and scent eliminating products, they only help. Try to stay away from heavy cover up type scents. It’s better to stay scent free then cover up odor with another.

- Shower before every trip to the woods. That’s hunting, scouting and checking trail cameras in addition to wearing scent free clothing.

- You go through the hassle of showering before you enter the woods every time. Don’t contaminate your scent free system by using just any towel off the hook. Designate, clean and store a Scent free towel used only for hunting.

- Never wear hunting clothing or boots in a vehicle.  Change at your vehicle once you arrive and before you leave your hunting location. Also have a set of scent free travel clothes that are used as a sacrificial garment for travel that is continually washed and used for this purpose only.  If you have to wear your hunting clothing in a vehicle such as unique situations where you are dropped off, cover the seat with a large garbage bag and spray it down.

- Spray down with scent eliminating spray not only at your vehicle but occasionally on the way to your tree and once in your tree. This is especially important on very warm days and over dressing on very cold days because despite your best efforts you probably will sweat.

- Use coolers to store and transport scent free clothing and accessories air tight and scent free.

- Sprinkle baking soda on clothing in your scent free container. Baking soda is the original scent eliminator; it is a main ingredient in most scent eliminating products. It’s cheap and easy to come by.  I pore baking soda all over my clothes for storage and before every hunt.

- Large long term storage during the off season or as the month’s progress into colder weather hunting, store your washed scent free clothing in old cleaned and unplugged freezers/refrigerators designated for hunting clothes. They are made to be air tight and are excellent in keeping clothes fresh.

- During cold and very hot days pack in the heaviest most layers of clothing and put them on once at your tree of when needed to eliminate perspiration from overheating.

- Take breaks on the way to your tree stand location if you feel yourself starting to overheat/ sweat. Most of the time you feel in a rush when in fact you have the time to slowdown.

- Dry the inside of your boots after every hunt. Foot sweat can occur even on the coolest days and if not dried can leave odor. We use old hair dryers rotating every 10 min between boots. Or you can purchase or make your own boat dryer.

- Wear rubber boots all season long. Rubber boots sprayed with scent eliminating spray in the field and maintained at home can leave them for the most part completely scent free. Leather and other boot materials other than rubber tend to hold scent. If you must wear leather, treat your boots as if they were a piece of clothing, clean, treat, maintain and store them in a scent free container before and after every hunt.

- Dry you’re hunting clothes in the dryer after every hunt, this is especially important with carbon clothing for reactivation. Regardless of carbon it is good to store clothing that are dry and not wet. Wet clothes are more susceptible to creating odor. We even like to spray our clothes down with scent spray and then dry them. This leaves your clothes dry and pretreated for your next hunt.

- Carbon clothing has revolutionized the way hunters control their scent. Here at Simply Whitetails we swear by it season after season and recommend its use. But if carbon clothing is not taken care of it is useless. The tip here is simple take care of your carbon clothing and recharge it after every hunt and store it air tight container. Carbon clothing can quickly become saturated with odor molecules if left out in the open.

- Understand and play the wind; understand that a safe wind is not just to your shooting lanes, it is how your scent travels through your hunting area. Be aware of your the wind as you access and leave your stands, prevent your scent from traveling to bedded or feeding deer altering their normal travel routes you are set up on and more importantly education them to your hunting strategies.
