In the field care, caping techniques and hide care are often overlooked in the excitement of the harvest, but are some of the most important steps to achieve the best results. Here are a few precautions that should be taken once you’ve bagged that trophy. Note that earlier in the season these become more crucial do to heat and short hide hair on the animal.

Field Care:

Don’t tag the animal through the ear.
Try not to drag the animal more than necessary on the face or front shoulders.
Never drag an animal with a rope or strap around its neck.
Never hang a deer by its neck.
If hung, be careful the animal’s nose is not damaged siting or scraping on ground.
Wipe excessive blood off hid with a cloth as soon as possible, never hose animal off.
Don’t cut anywhere around the face neck or front legs.

Caping:

Hanging a deer for days before caping is not recommended.
We recommend an experienced meat processor cape the animal or have us do it as soon as possible after harvest.
(Note :) Caping sounds easy; however specific cut locations are important for optimal final product. Hides cut incorrectly can be sawn, but are very difficult to stretch when needed. We typically keep more hide then most processors to allow for flexibility when fitting hide to form.

Hide Care:

Cool hide as quick as possible and freeze once cooled, or get it to the taxidermists as soon as possible. Just because it doesn’t smell bad doesn’t mean there’s no damage. Bacteria can quickly ruin a cape if it is not frozen.
